Police investigate schools' computer shutdown

De Pere police this week were continuing to investigate what may have caused the De Pere School District’s computer system to shut down for a full week earlier this month.
Authorities aren’t saying whether the system was hacked or what sort of information may have been exposed.
“With the complexity of the investigation involving the Unified School District of De Pere, no additional details can be released at this time,” Lt. Chad Opicka said Tuesday.
The computer system — which includes staff email, a student information system and a district website — went down two weeks ago and started to return online May 7.
The east-side district includes a high school, a middle school, an intermediate school and three elementary schools.
District superintendent Ben Villarruel said teachers and staff worked well through the shutdown and that things are running smoothly.
Police said they will release information when the investigation is completed.
